Introduction: In
this lesson students start with talking about how they use the internet, they
then watch a video about online safety and read about staying safe online. They
do a speaking activity based on the video and the text, and finish by making a
poster with their top tips for staying safe online.
1. Online logos, into (5 mins)

• Display some images of online logos, eg
facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Amazon, You
tube. Make
sure this students can identify them.
• ask
students how they (family
members or friends) use the internet, social.
media and mobile phones. For example - sending emails,
texts, using facebook,
twitter, buying things online, playing games
online, watching youtube videos, reading
articles. Ask the students to discuss with a
partner whether they do the same or
different online activate.

2. Videos (15 mins)
|
• To display the video. This video has a very
strong message about cyber-bullying and could be
quite upsetting.
• Students do the pre-viewing vocabulary task
before they watch.
• Ask the students to watch the video and to
decide with a partner what the main
message of the video is. Ask for a volunteer to
explain the video’s message - do the
rest of the class agree?
• Students watch again and then do the
comprehension tasks that accompany the video
- either online or the printed version.

3. Reading (15 mins)
|
Hand out or display the ‘Online safety UK’ text.
Ask students to read the text very
quickly (set a time limit of 2 minutes) and to
say how it is similar to the video they
watched (the text is all about various aspects of
how to stay safe online).
• Students do the ‘Check your vocabulary:
matching’ task under the text. Choose either
the online or printed version.
• Ask students to read the text again more slowly
and to complete the ‘Check your
understanding: true or false’ comprehension task
in pairs.
• Fast finishers can also do the ‘Check your
understanding: gap fill’ task.

4. Posters (9-mins)
|
• In groups students make posters with their top
tips for staying safe online. You could display the posters and have a class
vote on the poster with the best advice.

5. Homework (1 min)
|
hand out the following questions:
1 Do you agree with the top five tips for staying
safe online in the text?
2 What other tips could you add?
3 How useful are online safety videos like the
one you saw?
4 Do young people need more advice from adults
about how to behave online?
5 How do adults and young people use the internet
differently?
6 Which social networks (if any) do you prefer?
Why?
7 How safe is it for young children to use the
internet?
8 How will we communicate online in the future?
